6th Grade Hebrew - Betsy Zalaznick

Welcome to Sixth Grade Hebrew at Or Chadash Religious School! Students will learn the key prayers in the Torah service, the concluding prayers in the Shabbat morning service and the prayers for sleeping and waking. The curriculum covers many key prayer words and roots, prefixes, and suffixes. The students will refine their basic grammar skills and hone their prayer-reading skills.

Students are also challenged to think deeply about the meaning of the prayers and the prayers' connection to ancient sources and sacred text. In Sixth grade Hebrew our students' are beginning to understand the Jewish values underlying the prayers. We continue to explore the meanings of roots -- the basis of understanding the meanings of our prayers.

6th Grade Jewish Studies - Rabbi Jonathan Gerard

Welcome to Sixth Grade Jewish Studies at Or Chadash Religious School. We have adopted the CHAI curriculum for our Sixth Grade Jewish Studies class. The CHAI Curriculum is a flexible educational system specifically designed to facilitate lifelong Jewish learning within Reform congregations. The CHAI curriculum concentrates classroom learning on Torah (study) and g'milut chasadim (acts of loving-kindness), focusing on the big ideas of the core of Jewish education. Teaching these foundational concepts ensures that student learning will go beyond the specific classroom activities and will lead students to a deeper, enduring understanding, establishing a basis for lifelong Jewish learning and living.

The core curriculum theme for sixth grade is Revelation--What does it mean in our lives today?

The Essential Question for the Torah strand is:
What does God's Revelation through our texts have to teach me about my own relationship with God?

The Essential Question for the G'milut Chasadim strand is:
How does my involvement in acts of g'milut chasadim help me to discover and understand God?

Each week, Tzedakah money will be collected in class. The students will understand that tzedakah means doing acts of justice and righteousness, and at various times during the year they will help decide how and where the class tzedakah funds will be used.
